PortableApps.com vs LiberKey.com

For the past ten years, I have been running software from something other than the computer's hard drive. It all started when I was a Freshman in college and I came to two sad conclusions:

1. Internet explorer was a horrible browser.
2. Internet explorer was the only browser available on school computers.
3. OK... so there were three sad conclusions. The final one being that school computers did not allow you to install software on them.

So I began trying to install programs on different medium. Oddly (sadly) enough, the first thing I tried using was 75mb Zip disks. Yeah! I installed Firefox (at the time I think it was called Mozilla Firebird) onto my Zip disk and I was able to run it! I must have been the coolest freshman BYU ever saw!

Well... Running applications on a USB drive has come a long way since then, so I want to try to lay aside any biases I might have and do some (somewhat) scientific tests to determine which I like more. LiberKey or PortableApps.

Tip of The Day - Backing up files using external media

I recently did a post on different options for backing up and storing files online. Even though online storage and backup is wonderful, there is a chance that we could experience an apocalypse. In that case, online storage would do us no good and we could possibly loose important files (ok... in the case of an apocalypse, files are the last thing to worry about, BUT there IS a chance our file storage company of choice might go under). To ensure that our important files are kept safe, it is wise to consider other methods for backup.

Tip of the Day - Running Programs from your USB Drive

One thing that I have been doing for the past 5 years or so has been running all my programs from a portable or USB drive.  This allows me to take my software wherever I go.  If I need to use certain programs on other people's computers (or on school computers where they don't allow you to install software), this has been a perfect solution.

I recommend using portableapps.com or liberkey.com

Both of these come with custom start menus and other options.

I started out using portableapps, but recently I have been using liberkey.  Liberkey allows for automatic updating of the software. This is a great way to keep your software updated and organized.
