Create an educational music video using open source software and Linux

I teach English to seven year olds in China. One point of English grammar that is especially difficult for a native Chinese speaker is when to use "is," "am," and "are," or when to add an "s" to verbs (example: "I like," or "he likes"). To make this easier for my students, I decided to write, sing, and put together a music video for them to watch.

I will not be doing a tutorial specific to each piece of software I used, but with rather write up a guide of sorts saying how and why I used each piece of software. I have been a long time advocate of Linux and especially open source software. I hope that my music video demonstrates that a professional(ish?) music video can be created using only open sourced software.

Draw a sunset with tree silhouette landscape scene using Inkscape and the Gimp

My very first tutorial on this website was drawing a tree in the sunset (similar to the image you see above). That tutorial shows signs of me not really being experienced in tutorial making... it is not very detailed. So I decided to redo the tutorial. This tutorial will be doing the same thing, but with much more detail and instruction. Ideally, someone with no prior Inkscape or Gimp experience (and a lot of patience) could complete this tutorial. (Note: This tutorial was done using Inkscape version .48)

How to create an icon or logo from an existing drawing using Inkscape

A while ago my brother came up to me and handed me a scratch piece of paper. It was something that he had drawn years ago and he just found it as he was cleaning up some things. He mentioned that he always thought it was an interesting looking creature(?) and that he wondered what it would look like as a logo.

I thought that would be fun idea to see what necessary steps one would need to take using Inkscape to create an icon or logo from an existing drawing.

Create a Celebrity Wallpaper using Inkscape - Jimmer Fredette

With all the hype BYU's Jimmer Fredette has been receiving, I decided to do a celebrity wallpaper tutorial featuring him using the Gimp. Like most things I do, I always wonder if I could do it in both Gimp and Inkscape. So I decided to try it. This tutorial will show how to remove backgrounds from raster images. I will talk briefly about bitmap traces, and I will also be using many texture filters and layers.

How to Draw Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty!
So the last post I did was drawing a pumpkin. I am not too happy with that so I wanted to get something new up quick. Being in a somewhat Asian mood this morning, I decided a nice simple project would be to use Inkscape to draw Hello Kitty.

Creating a business card using Inkscape

If you are in the design business, a business card is a great way to show off your level of professionalism. No one will take you seriously if you claim to be a designer but use an inkjet printer with some business card template cutouts. I will try to make this look as legit as possible.

Texture in Inkscape

So I have been using Inkscape for many years now and I absolutely love it. I remember when I was taking some Adobe Illustrator classes in college that I would use Inkscape instead because it was so much easier and faster to use. There were however occasions where there were some assignments for the class that simply could not be done in Inkscape. I have decided to go and look at some Illustrator tutorials and see if I can replicate the concepts in Inkscape.

Design a Landscape - Tree in Sunset

Note: This tutorial was the first tutorial I ever did. Because of this, it is not exactly that great of a tutorial. Rather than step by step instructions, it is more or less a guide on how to do something like the picture you see above if you are already somewhat familiar with Inkscape. I decided to do a better, more updated version. Version 2 if you will. You can find it here. I am keeping this original tutorial mainly because I just don't want to delete anything. Again; I suggest you go to this better tutorial.

For this tutorial, we will be making a nice sunset landscaping scene. This is pretty easy to do but can look pretty nice. We will be using mostly Inkscape, but will use the Gimp some to help us with our initial tree (Inkscape and Gimp are both free program often used as a replacement for Illustrator or Photoshop).
