The Difference Between RAW and JPG - A Visual Guide

RAW Image Edited in Darktable
Ever since I have been getting more into photography I have always been looking for what I need to do to improve my skills. I am not aspiring to become a professional photographer, but I believe that I can make simple changes to the way I take pictures that will improve the overall quality of my photos.

One of the improvements I made a while ago was shooting everything in the camera's RAW format. I have noticed that there are some pretty big drawbacks to shooting in RAW. Namely, it takes much more memory, it takes longer to edit, and the camera takes longer to process and save the images to my SD card. With all these drawbacks, I decided to do an experiment to convince myself that shooting in RAW is worth the extra effort.

Organizing your photos in Linux

Linux offers quite a few different photo managers and editors. DigiKam, F-Spot and Shotwell are some of the more popular photo managers in Linux. Though these photo managers all have different positive features, the photo manager I prefer to use is a bit less traditional for Linux. It is Google's Picasa. Tip of the Day - Portrait photography using a zoom/telephoto lens

Usually when you want to take nice portrait pictures, you will use a nice, fast lens, and adjust your aperture to get a blurry background.

The reality is that most people have a simple point and shoot camera that does not allow manual aperture settings, or they don't know how (or why) to change the settings.

Next time you are trying to take a portrait photo, try zooming in all the way and standing back a bit. This will create a blurry background and have a nice effect.  When you do this, make sure to have steady hands and good lighting (this probably will not work well indoors unless you are using a tripod).
